Local KC Dining - The Delicious, and The Overpriced
I love so many things about Kansas City. I really do. I have lived in the area for over 15 years now and it is my home. I particularly love Spring, Summer, and Fall :) (HATE Winter) There are many great things about this city….. the people, the art, the local music, the fountains….and one of the best things about this city is the FOOD! We don’t just have restaurants, we have local dining at its best. From Michael Smith to Manny’s we have so many options to choose from. My husband (Mike) and I love to search out new places to experience.
Chez Elle - Last weekend I had the opportunity to treat Mike to a late breakfast at this french creperie and coffee house. A place that neither if us had tried yet. It was a beautiful morning around ten, it wasn’t blazing hot and we had previously noted the cute umbrella covered tables out front. Unfortunately when we arrived they were all occupied, but as soon as we walked in, I no longer cared. The atmosphere inside was perfect! Cheerful and bright, yet still comfortable. We walked up to the counter and ordered a couple of mocha’s and we each picked out a crepe we thought we would enjoy. We got our coffee right away and quickly found a cozy spot in the corner to sit at. I expected our food might be a bit delayed in arriving since it was Saturday and fairly busy. Much to my surprise, about 5 minutes later our food was brought to our table. I ordered a savory chicken crepe, and Mike got a sweet one filled with bananas, strawberries, and Nutella. They were both delicious and we finished every bite. Yum!!! The coffee on the other hand was a different story, not so good. However, the crepes more than make up for it and we will, no doubt, be back again as soon as we can.
Blanc Bottles + Burgers - Mike and I stopped by the new location a few weeks ago for the first time. We had wanted to try the Gourmet Burgers here for a while, and we had read numerous glowing reviews so we had high expectations when we walked in. Unfortunately our anticipation fell flat. At first glance, the decor is cute and trendy, until you realize the chairs are an uncomfortable cheap plastic, and the table is a laminate composite. This would be fine at your corner burger joint, but Blanc has positioned themselves on the Country Club Plaza and their prices reflect the location. I would not call them overpriced simply due to the decor, If their food was delicious it would be worth it. It is not. The flavors are not complementary, and my burger was well done (the menu states all burgers will be cooked to medium unless otherwise requested). I would not call it gourmet, but it tries to be. They did have a wide selection of beer and soft drinks, unfortunately though, they did not offer wine. Wine makes everything better, right? I finally settled on ordering a bottle of Mexican Cola ($3) and was again disappointed when the waitress unceremoniously poured most all of it into a plain glass without asking if this is what I wanted. I did not. I wanted to drink out of the bottle. It may sound silly, but we were at a place called burgers and bottles after all, and if I’m drinking my Coke out of a glass, I expect a free refill. So we will not be back, the place didn’t feel genuine - Honestly, I would rather go to Burger King and save 30 bucks.
